2024 Goat Counts in Review
December 31, 2024
We had a busy summer full of goat counts in 2024!
We were busy this summer!
Every year we expand our goat count coverage, and this year we:
completed 6 goat counts (White Chuck, Washington; Lake Chelan area, Washington; Henry's Mountains, Montana; Mt. Baker, Washington; Glacier National Park, Montanta; and Black Hills, South Dakota. An additional pilot count was planned in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, but was cancelled due to weather)
solicited volunteers and aided in advertising for 4 additional mountain goat and wild sheep counts (Ruck for Shulaps, completed by the Wild Sheep Society in BC; two counts in the Humboldt Mountain Range, Nevada (photo provided by Joshua Kirk on one of those counts); and Toquima Mountain Range, Nevada)
So what does that mean?
Over 50 volunteers out counting
in 5 different states/provinces
covering 10 different count areas
with at least 272 mountain goat sightings (plus all the other wildlife seen!)
A huge thank you to our sponsors: Vortex Optics, Stone Glacier, Yeti, and Alpen Fuel
And an even huger thank you to our volunteers who actually get out into goat country and count for us! Our volunteers put all the efforts into getting into goat country, with the hope of seeing our favorite animals, but actual sightings are not guaranteed. Even an observation of zero (albeit disappointing) is still crucial data for our biologists, so thank you as always to our volunteers!
Full goat count reports will be included in our 2024 Annual Report, released in early 2025.
