2018 Crazy Mountains Volunteer Project - Montana

In the late 1950’s and into the early 1960’s the Crazy Mountains boasted similar goat numbers to what we have today. The population suffered a massive collapse that closed the area to hunting for 30 years until 1991. The die-off has been shrouded in mystery but mainly attributed to starvation.

In an effort to avoid another massive loss of the area’s goats, extensive hunting has been implemented to stabilize the population. In recent years, nanny tags have been issued in a further effort to curb the population.

Unfortunately, recent low kid recruitment and low population counts have raised the concern that the population may once again be falling into a collapse similar to the early 1960's.

We need your help! On August 11-12, RMGA volunteers will again divide into search teams for our annual summer census in the Crazy Mountains.

This survey requires capable and experienced backpackers. Mandatory equipment includes quality boots, camping gear and optics. Many volunteers are needed for this particular project to be a success. Please invite family and friends.
