Citizen Science
Goat Counts
Every year RMGA works with regional wildlife managers and biologists to conduct mountain goat counts. These counts are what is called citizen science -- where scientific data collection is conducted, in whole or in part, by non-professionals. In the case of the RMGA work, this data collection is lead by wildlife managers that work for states, provinces or First Nations. This is an opportunity for volunteers to learn about local mountain goat populations and habitat by participating in the collection of scientific data for real studies.
Limited spots are available for participants on each count and participation is prioritized to RMGA members. If you sign-up, it is expected that you will commit to the event or give ample notice if you are unable to attend. In order to participate, volunteers must have all your own hiking gear and be able to spend 1-3 days hiking moderate to difficult terrain with expected inclines. The first date for each count is an training session with the biologist and participation is mandatory.
All volunteers must sign waivers to participate.
Education Program
The education program is centered around education, with a focus on providing resources that promote responsible wildlife management and conservation practices. We believe that by increasing awareness and understanding, we can make a significant impact on the survival of these magnificent animals. If you share our passion for mountain goat preservation, please explore our website and contact us to learn more about how you can get involved.
RMGA Research and Conservation Grant Program
Due to a variety of factors, including funding, focus, and terrain, mountain goats lack the breadth of scientific data of other game species such as sheep, elk, and deer. One of RMGA's core areas of work is to help bridge these data gaps by funding and supporting research and conservation projects focused on mountain goats. Funding decisions are guided by our Science and Conservation Committee, which is comprised of research and wildlife management professionals who can make the most critical recommendations to our Board of Directors.
To Apply:
To apply for a grant from RMGA, please review the Project Priorities and download and fill out two (2) forms in the links below. One form covers the narrative aspects of the project, and the second form is a summary and detailed breakdown of the budget. Grants from RMGA typically result in around $5,000 per application, though the SCC has made recommendations above and beyond this amount for exceptional projects.
Below you will find the Grant Application Form and Budget Worksheet. Please fill out both forms and submit using the form below or by emailing to: Grant Submission
Open for Intakes
Grant applications are open from June 1 - November 31.
Please allow 4-6 weeks for review, questions, and/or award notifications.

Climate Change &
Mountain Goats
Climate change will have many direct and negative impacts on mountain goats (for information about our full position statement, see our News and Updates page). An important step anyone can take is to educate themselves and increase awareness around these issues. You can find informative, downloadable materials fact-checked by the SCC here - social media posts, infographics and kid-friendly worksheets to share online, at home, or in the classroom!
